Vice President K-12 - Sandra Henning

Sandra Henning - Vice President- K-12

Hello!  My name is Sandra Henning and I am the newly appointed K-12 Vice-President.  I recently completed the School Counselor Leadership class taught by Sue Schirmer and through her influence as well as the encouragement from my mentor Dr. Kris Meyer I knew I had to become more involved in the profession of school counseling.  This is when I decided I wanted to become an active part of the ISCA board.

I earned my Masters of School Counseling from Buena Vista University in the spring of 2012.  In the fall of 2012 I was hired as the K-12 School Counselor at AGWSR where I was already serving as the At-Risk Coordinator for several years.  Prior to working at AGWSR, I was a social worker and assistant campus director for Quakerdale in New Providence, Iowa.

I have a passion for helping students in all areas of their life but particularly in planning their life goals including post-secondary education and their plans for their life into adulthood.  I believe in life-long learning. I work to instill that belief in each student through lessons I teach, individual student planning, and my own role-modeling by continuing to improve myself professionally and personally through on-going classes and involvement.

I am excited to challenge my leadership capabilities while I serve on the ISCA board.  I want to be more involved in the advocacy for school counselors in Iowa.  I want our stakeholders to know how important we are and what we can do for them! Although I am fairly new in this position I bring a lot of experience in working with students and families.  I hope to offer support to K-12 counselors in whatever they may need.  If I don’t know the answer, I will definitely help find the answer.  Please let me know how I can help you!

Away from the school day, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have been married to my husband David for 23 years.  We have two daughters.  Danielle just completed her LPN program and she will be starting her RN program in Kansas in January.  Emily will be a sophomore in high school and she is active in volleyball, track, and FFA.  In my free time I like to run, read, watch reality TV, and browse Pinterest. This summer we also decided we were going to be a camping family and purchased an RV.  Life is good!
