Val Stickler Awarded 2014 Gary Henrichs Memorial Award
Val Stickler, school counselor at Washington Elementary School in the Atlantic Community School District, was recognized as the recipient of the 2014 Gary Henrichs Memorial Award by the Iowa School Counselor Association (ISCA) at the annual ISCA conference in Altoona, Iowa on November 3-4, 2014.
This annual award is presented to an outstanding school counselor/school counseling program in memory of Gary Henrichs. Mr. Henrichs was a lifelong supporter of school counseling in the state of Iowa. He was an elementary school counselor from 1969-1976. In 1977, he joined the Iowa Department of Education as a Guidance Consultant. In this role, he helped provide direction to school districts across Iowa for over twenty years as they worked to establish outstanding elementary school counseling programs. This award also includes a grant of $600.00.
Ms. Stickler’s application was focused on the successful School-Based Stress Reduction Program (SBSR) that she has implemented at Washington Elementary School in Atlantic Iowa. The current program is an Intentional Small Group for students from grades K-3 who have been identified with one or more symptoms of anxiety, ADD/ADHD, depression, low self –concept and oppositional defiant behavior. The goals of the SBSR program are to relax, encourage and motivate students to have a positive school experience through mindfulness-based stress reduction, progressive muscle relaxation, basic yoga practices and breath work. This program has been embraced and supported by school administrators, teachers, parents and students. This grant will allow Ms. Stickler to expand this effective SBSR program into a whole class setting and eventually into an entire school and district wide setting. Also, Ms. Stickler presented a session at the 2014 ISCA Annual Conference on this SBSR program.
We were truly impressed by Ms. Stickler’s application, her enthusiasm for this program, and her passion for working with students. She is a credit to the profession of school counseling. If you would like more information about Ms. Stickler and this statewide recognition please contact us at:
