Kim Bowen Awarded 2014 Dr. John L. Thompson Award for Excellence in School Counseling
Kim Bowen, school counselor at Center Point Urbana High School in the Center Point Urbana Community School District, was recognized as the recipient of the 2014 Dr. John L. Thompson Award for Excellence in School Counseling by the Iowa School Counselor Association (ISCA) at the annual ISCA conference in Altoona, Iowa on November 3-4, 2014.
The Dr. John L. Thompson Award for Excellence in School Counseling was created by the family of John L. Thompson to recognize counselors who have developed exemplary programs to help students grow in academic and/or life skills. The award is a tribute to the vision of Dr. Thompson as Director of Guidance and Counseling and Students at Risk at Heartland Area Education Association, his service to the Iowa Counseling Association, and his mentoring of counseling practicum students as an adjunct professor at Iowa State University. This award includes a grant of $600.00.
Ms. Bowen’s application for this award was focused on the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Center Point Urbana High School that was initiated in 2011. She has been the internal PBIS coach since it began. The ultimate goals of this PBIS program are to create a positive and safe learning environment for ALL students and staff and to establish ways to support students who are struggling to meet both academic and behavioral expectations. A unique and very successful feature of this program is the “Extra Pointer Award.”Through staff nomination, four to eight high school students are recognized for going above and beyond the school expectations. This grant will allow Ms. Bowen to continue to monitor, sustain and transform this successful PBIS program.
“ As I reflect on our school climate from the beginning of 2011 until present, I can truly say that there is a pride in our school, a renewed school spirit and a feeling by students that the staff is willing to go the extra mile for them.” Kim Bowen
We were truly impressed by Ms. Bowen’s application, her enthusiasm for this program, and her passion for working with students. She is a credit to the profession of school counseling. If you would like more information about Ms. Bowen and this statewide recognition please contact us at:
