Welcome from the President

Welcome to the ISCA website – we’re glad you’re here! You may have noticed our mission listed to the right:  to advance the academic, career and emotional/social development of all students through excellence in school counseling. It’s our hope that ISCA can be instrumental in helping to provide the resources that school counselors in Iowa need to do their jobs well and be effective.   It’s a great time to be a school counselor and celebrate the unique, vital role that school counselors play in student success.

We would encourage you to get involved in ISCA as your professional organization, and there are a number of ways to do this.  First, become an ISCA member.  As an ISCA member, your benefits include (but are not limited to) access to website resources (including our members-only section), e-newsletters, legislative advocacy, professional development, and a professional network.  Secondly, hopefully you were able to attend our annual conference which was held November 5-7.  If not, please make plans to “Go the Distance:  Step Into the Future” at next year’s conference:  November 4-6, 2018, Prairie Meadows Convention Center, Altoona, Iowa.

Our priority at ISCA continues to be to promote the role of the school counselor and ASCA model programs.  We are working to highlight professional development for school counselors that supports this work.  Some opportunities include:

Counselor Academies
Counselor Academies began in Fall 2017 and are currently in session at six AEA’s in Iowa, with more than 300 school counselors participating

Go Alliance Courses
Go Alliance courses are uniquely designed to help school counselors further their knowledge in college and career readiness.

Professional Development Webinars
ISCA has designed a webinar series on ASCA model programs which will be coming in 2018.  Until then,
Click here for a wealth of other information from the ISCA/ICAN Webinar Series.

Outside of general membership, conference attendance, and the ISCA professional development opportunities, other ways to get involved include volunteering on a committee or even seeking a board position.

Meet the Board
Perhaps you’re not sure about that right now, but if you have time, check out the profiles of the board members on the Governing Board page.  You’ll find that we are all regular people with a passion for school counseling.

I did not join ISCA with the intention of becoming president, but being around other amazing school counselors has helped me grow professionally in ways I could never have imagined.  You never know where your journey will lead!  One of my favorite quotes is:   “all our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them”.  So, if you have a passion for all things school counseling, jump in and join us!

Have a great school year!
